People in Need - Relief and Development Department

Together striving for a better world

People in Need (PIN) helps people in emergencies both in crises of war, in areas affected by natural disasters as well as in places where it is hard for people to break out of the vicious circle of poverty without support. Humanitarian assistance to the victims of  armed conflict abroad was the initial undertaking of People in Need when it was first set up in the 1990s. Over time, PIN began to deal with longer-term problems overseas such as the shortage of safe water, restricted access to good-quality education and health services or environmental degradation.

Humanitarian assistance means speedy intervention to save lives, alleviate suffering and help disaster victims get back on their feet. Development cooperation comprises efforts to help people in their attempts to escape poverty and ensure further development. People in Need often follows up on its humanitarian activities with development projects in order to help prevent future crises and mitigate their negative impacts.

PIN's Relief and Development Department operates in twenty-two countries with permanent offices in fifteen of them. Every year it carries out projects worth millions of Euros for hundreds of thousands of people born in less fortunate parts of our planet.

People in Need is a member of Alliance2015, a strategic network of seven European non-governmental organisations engaged in humanitarian assistance and development projects. This collaboration yields effective results both in the target countries and in campaigns aimed at influencing the attitudes of politicians and the general public in Europe.
